In this illustrated lecture, I will describe the 18 most important architectural home styles of the 19th and early 20th centuries. In so doing, we will explore these issues: Why were there so many styles? Where did they come from? Who originated them? What do the styles “mean,” sociologically and philosophically? What were the goals of architects who originated new styles? And what are the key characteristics that we can focus on to correctly identify home styles? The course covers Federal Style, Greek Revival, Renaissance Revival, French Second Empire, Italianate, Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, Gothic Revival, Eastlake, Romanesque, Shingle Style, Arts & Crafts, Prairie School, Bungalow, Tudor Revival, Art Deco, Mid-Century Modern, and Postmodernism.
